FAQs

I’m nervous about starting therapy. Is that normal?

It’s totally normal to be nervous about starting therapy. It can feel intimidating to open up with someone and talk about how you feel. The fear around that can feel overwhelming. It takes courage to start going to therapy. The fact that you are on this website, looking for help, and reading this right now shows that you are being brave and seeking help.

Therapy is a space where you can be yourself and feel safe from judgement, including feeling nervous. We are committed to finding a way to care for your nervousness and ensure sessions are as comfortable as possible.

We’re here if you want to talk about it during a first session.

How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?

Take your time to read through our website. If you sense that True Peace Therapy may be a good fit based on what you are reading, you can schedule yourself in our online appointment scheduler.

During a first session, you can ask more about our qualifications, training, and education, about how we have helped other people like you before, or any other questions you may have that are specific to you. You’ll also be able to share what’s going on for you and your therapist can share ideas around how they can help you.

It may be helpful to think of the first few sessions as trying out the waters together. During the sessions, you’ll be able to start seeing what it's like. Our approach is not going to work for everyone. What’s most important to us is that you find someone who you feel is the right fit for you. We can explore that together.

What if I don't want to talk about something?

It’s normal if you don’t feel ready to share everything. During your therapy sessions, it will always be up to you if you feel ready to talk about something or not. Your therapist will be there to guide you towards discovering what feels comfortable for you to share. Working at your own pace, we can look at the tough stuff if you're ready.

You can also share in therapy that you are nervous to open up about something and we can talk about that too. Your feelings are welcome as are your feelings about how you feel. We’re here to help you with whatever is going on for you..

I’m scared that if I open up, you will think I’m crazy.

If you open up in therapy, your therapist will not think you are crazy, we will think you are courageous and human. Many of our clients have had the same fear (that people would think they are crazy).

Working with our clients has shown us that the challenges your are facing are normal and natural.

You have nothing to be ashamed about. Nothing you can say will cause your therapist to judge you.

We know nobody's perfect, we all struggle, we are humans trying to do and be our best, just like everyone else.

Whatever it is you're going through, True Peace Therapy provides a safe space where you can feel heard and supported without judgement

FAQs

Does what we talk about in therapy remain confidential?

You may be concerned that your friends, family, or work colleagues could learn what you have said during therapy. So we want you to know that unless you are in danger or someone else is, your story is confidential and your time in the session is protected.

Your privacy and trust are of utmost importance.

You can rest assured that you can talk about anything without fear of that information getting out.

If you have specific questions about how confidentiality works, you can ask during your first session or anytime during our work together.

How long will therapy take?

You might be asking about how long therapy will take because you are currently struggling and want relief fast.

If this is true for you, we want you to know that on average, new clients start seeing improvements after the first 3-5 sessions.

By that point, they they feel like they have learned some ways to manage challenging stuff in their lives a bit better.

The total duration of therapy varies from client to client. Some clients find 6-12 weeks to be enough to resolve immediate challenges. While other clients feel more supported by longer term therapy.

We will work together to find the length of time that works for you.

What can I expect during the first session?

Overall, you can think of the first session as two-way interview where we can ask each other questions so we can begin to know each other. Your therapist will invite you to share more about yourself and may also ask about what’s worked or not worked for your mental health in the past.

Some common questions that therapists ask during a first session include:

  • What brought you to therapy?

  • What goals would you like to reach by going to therapy?

  • What would you like to me to know about you to understand your current challenges?

You can ask questions, as well. You might be curious about about why they are a therapist or how they’ve helped other clients like you.

The most important part of a first session is to experience what therapy is like and that you feel safe, accepted, and comfortable.
